Hi Carl:
I was station there from March 1953 until Jan 1954.  I don't believe our paths crossed.  I went on vacation last month to Europe and visited Trieste for the first time since leaving in 1954.  The building at Via Ghega 12 is the same from the outside but has been totally renovated inside.  It is now a music conservatory.  I was interested in the German army's murder and mutilation of several Triestinos and copied the plaque on the outside wall.  You might be interested:

On my June 2009 visit to Trieste I visited my 1953 17th CIC Detachment building at Via Ghega 12 to see how it had changed and to read the plaque in the front of the building commemorating the death and mutilation of several anti-facist Triestinos at the hands of the German occupiers.  Below are the words on the plaque and a translation from Italian into English:

ALLE FINESTRE E LUNGE LE SCALE
DI QUESTO PALAZZO
IL XXIII APRILE MCMXLIV
CINQANTA PENDENTI SALME DI MARTIRI
MOSTRARONO ALLA CITTA INORRIDITA
LA FEROCIA DELL’IRATO GERMANICO TIRANNO
CIECAMENTE SFOGATA
SU UOMINI TI LIBERI SENSI
INERMI PRIGIONIERI IN SUE MANI
A PERPETUO
RICORDO DEI SACRIFICATI
POSE IL COMUNE - XXIII APRILE MCMXLVII

AT THE WINDOWS AND ALONG THE STAIRS
OF THIS BUILDING
ON APRIL 23, 1944
FIFTY HANGING BODIES OF MARTYRS
SHOWED TO THE HORRIFIED CITY
THE FEROCITY OF THE ANGRY GERMAN TYRANT
VENTED ON FREEDOM LOVING MEN,
DEFENSELESS PRISONERS IN HIS HANDS.
PLACED BY THE MUNICIPALITY IN EVERLASTING MEMORY
OF THE SACRIFICED -- APRIL 23, 1947

TRANSLATED BY
ZELJKA
The building is now a music conservatory. The outside remains nearly unchanged, but the inside is unrecognizable and beaufifully renovated.  The driveway through the front portal and rear access to via Udine have been eliminated.

Hi Jack:
Glad to hear someone survived from our era. We should have met because I arrived in Sep '53 and left in Oct 54. Was Maj Black the CO when you were there?
You are the first person I have heard from since I inquired many months ago.
A lot of water under the dam since my CIC days--law school, federal prosecutor, defense trial attorney, and now retired in Naples, Fl writing books on heroes of the Holocaust (see www.carlsteinhouse.com).
How about you?
