NINETEENTH DAY OF REMEMBRANCE

The ACICV annual Day of Remembrance, memorializing deceased
members of the Counter Intelligence Corps family was held this year on Friday, May 10, 2013 (Armed Forces Day) at Arlingtion National Cemetery and the adjacent Fort Myer, Virginia.  Attending were  ACICV members and guests visiting as a group at the wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown and then enjoying the luncheon program which followed at Fort Myer's Spates Community Hall.

The Day of Remembhrance observation began in 1991 as a program of the National Capitol Chapter of the ACICV, and has continued early since then.  Several years ago the program was adopted buy the National ACICV as its annual memorial program honoring all deceased members of the CIC fanily.  The National Capitol Chapters continues as the active producer of the Day of Remembrance program, with logistical and social help from the officers of the ACICV and from the Northeastern Chapter.

In past years, the Day of Remembrance has been held during the month of November, on a date close to that of Veterans Day; this year the date was moved to May 16th to align with the weekend of the national ACICV Reunion taking place May 15 to 19 at the Baltimore-Washington Airport Holiday Inn in Suburban Baltimore.  The date adjustment was made to enable those memberws from distant states, who were enjoying the Reunion celebrating the ACICV 25 Anniversary, to also attend the Day of Remembrance.  The planning worked out perfectlly, two large comfortable tour buses bringing the members and guests from the reunion hotel to Fort Myer in Virginia to join other members awaiting them there.  The entire group then moved into Arlington National Cemetery and arrived at the Tomb of the Unknown to witness the CIC wreath-laying ceremony there.

THE LUNCHEON PROGRAM:  In the earlier years of the Day of Remembrance programs, the affair took place at the Fort Myer Officer's Club, in the past several years however Spates Community Hall has been a more comfortable venue because of the size of our party.  A printed illustrated booklet was distributed to all attending the luncheon, covering the agenda of the programs, and also a printed listing of all deceased members of the CIC family.  The latter is not confined to those who held ACICV membership; it includes hundreds of names of deceased members of other CIC clubs and organizations, and from death notices of additional CIC people known to have been assigned to the CIC while on active service.  The fifteen pages in this year's listing bears a total of 2,447 names.  Ninety-nine of our comrades are added to those listed last year.

The luncheon program was called to order by luncheon Master of Ceremony Paul Ill of Florida, who gave a few personal comments on his many years of enjoyment in and about the ACICV.

The ACICV Chairman, Fred Walters of the State of Maryland, gave the official Welcome to the Day of Remembrance, followed by the Invocation by ACICV Chaplain Father Ron Lawson of Massachusetts.

Duane Rasmussen of Texas led the Pledge to the Flag, and then and inspirational Scripture Reading was given by Ellen Yarborough of Virginia. Chaplain Ronald l.  was introduced by Paul Ill.   He is and excellent speaker!

A Roll Call, providing the names of the CIC dead of the past year was read by Betty Walters of Maryland of , joined by Jeanne Lawrence of Texas, John Knobloch of Florida and Richard Leiweke of Illinois. Taps were sounded though bell pealing as the individula names were read.  The Bell Ringers were Judie and Linn Boerger of Christ Lutheran Church of Fairfax, Virginia.

After an excellent buffet luncheon meal, the program continued with closing remarke on the Day pf Remembrance by Elly Burton, President of the host National Capitol Chapter and as Chairperson for all of the activities of the Day of Remembrance.  Her planning and execution of the program had  begun many months earlier, and the successful results clearly evidenced her talented management.  Elly will tell you that any succes is due to the help she received from many hands, mostly those of the members of the National Capitol Chapter.  It's a great team Elly! Our thanks to all of you.

Closing remarks were also given by Ted Critchfield of Illinois .

Father Lawson, who had given the blessing before lunch, now closed t;he program with a benediction, concluding the 2008 ACICV Day of Remembrance.

The 2013 Day of Remembnrance was a beautiful memorial expression, honoring the deceased of the CIC family.  May they all rest well in memory.
