The Army allows CI personnel who separated honorably from the U.S. Army to retire their badge and credentials.  The kicker is that the Army's Central B&C Repository, Fort Huachuca, Arizona, must still have your complete set of B&Cs on file, and if not, then you're still authorized to have a badge retired.  The cost to retire a full set of B&Cs is $118.00, the cost to have a badge encased in Lucite is $56.00.  The only badge available for this program is the current MI badge.  If you're interested in this program please contact the Army's Badge and Credentials Program Management Office at (520) 538-6110 or (520) 533-2320 for more information.
Also - the current B&C Program Manager (Mr. Randall Long) would entertain coming to your annual reunion and present a briefing to the attendees on the state of the US Army B&C Program; he can be contacted via email at randall.long@conus.army.mil.

Times have changed. When I obtained my badge in Lucite many years ago, cost was $24 including postage. Even at $55 this is a bargain. In 1999 (no longer permitted) a lucite mounted MI Badge sold on ebay for $355, and I saw an unmounted WWII era badge in original leather case for sale at a show in 2007, for asking price of $2000 (no takers).
